LAMPS HAND BLOWN ENGRAVED VESSELS PAINTINGS ON SILK MUSEUM EXHIBITION GALLERY ARCHIVES MAYAN ART GREG WORKING
Galería Azul is an independent art gallery and working studio in central Cozumel, Mexico, founded and operated by glass artist Greg Dietrich. The gallery began in approximately 2000, after Greg moved to Cozumel and established a studio in the lower level of his home. Greg first became involved with glassblowing in 1990 and later developed a specialised technique known as cameo engraving. This involves creating blown glass with layers of contrasting colors and then carefully engraving through those layers using diamond tools to reveal detailed images. His artwork is strongly inspired by Cozumel’s marine environment, including coral reefs, sea turtles, dolphins, rays and tropical fish. Galería Azul provides visitors with an opportunity to see original artwork and, when arranged in advance, observe the artist working in the studio.
Galería Azul is both an art gallery and an active artist’s studio located approximately three blocks inland from Cozumel’s waterfront. It specializes in unique, handcrafted works created by Greg Dietrich and other local artists. The gallery’s main products include: Engraved, hand-blown glass lamps Illuminated glass night-lights Engraved glass vases and vessels Glass sculptures and decorative pieces Colorful paintings on silk Artwork by other Cozumel-based artists Selected paintings, jeweler, photography and handmade artistic pieces One of the gallery’s distinctive techniques is layered or cameo engraving, where the artist engraves through different colored layers of glass to create detailed images and patterns. Some pieces are displayed with wooden, metal or stone bases, while others allow the glass itself to form the complete artwork. Galería Azul is particularly suitable for visitors interested in: Original artwork rather than mass-produced souvenirs Glassblowing and glass engraving Marine-inspired art Meeting an independent working artist Purchasing one-of-a-kind handmade pieces Learning about the creative process behind the artwork Visitors should contact the gallery before arriving if they specifically want to see Greg working, arrange a private visit or visit outside the regular weekday hours.
